“mars” is inspired by the story of a transgender fan that YUNGBLUD met. their parents weren’t accepting of their gender, but with the impact and support of the community, their parents started to accept her as their daughter after experiencing one of his live shows. the release date and music video were announced on November 25, 2020, just two days prior to its release, on his social media channels. in an april 2019 interview at Paaspop Festival, YUNGBLUD was asked what his favourite fan moment was, he answered: "i remember on Vans Warped Tour, it was kinda crazy, i remember this one girl came up to me and she said that she had a sex change, she was formerly a boy and that my music helped her get through that and feel that her identity—it was okay to be herself. and that was fucking crazy for me, and i can tell you that there’s a song on the new album, about her, and how inspiring it was to kind of help someone like that, it’s fucking crazy that our community helped someone feel like they could be themselves and take a huge step and achieve their goal of wanting to be themself." the song title and inspiration was revealed in a december 2019 interview with Metro: there’s a song called ‘mars’ which is important to me, ’cause i had a trans man come up to me and say my track ‘kill somebody’ last year helped his parents with the community he wanted to be in. and [they] allowed him to go from being a girl – they sat with him through his transition to be a boy. i thought that was fucking crazy. he told me about his story, about how nobody understood him, and it clicked with me because it reminded me of ‘life On mars?’ by david bowie –  so i’m paying homage to that.
